Hey, hey ladies.
Oh my goodness – running a business is one of the hardest things you will ever do, but it is also one of the most holy things you will ever do.
This topic is very humbling and I’m only scratching the surface here of what it looks like to grow an online business as a believer – what it means to show up, push through the hard, surrender often, and be stretched more than you ever thought possible.
Honestly, running my own business is one of the most sanctifying processes I have ever walked through.
Online business is hard, especially when you’re just starting, but there’s always going to be hard things in life; however, as believers there’s a whole other layer to it.
This isn’t just business – it’s ministry.
Online Business Is Harder for Christians Because We Balance More
I truly believe building a faith-based online business is harder for Christians because we are accountable to more. It’s not just about revenue goals or marketing metrics. It’s about stewarding people and leading with love while also focusing on justice. It’s about having boundaries without becoming cold.
You can’t let clients control what you do and you can’t let team members dictate your standards. You have to love people well while also holding the line.
That doesn’t make everyone happy.
Many people will misunderstand you. Some will dislike you. Others will make your life harder because they don’t understand what you’re building. And at the same time, you’ll have incredible people who raise you up and encourage you.
Business stretches you because it’s built around people, and people are complicated. I was talking to my husband recently about how organizations are just challenging. They are like living organisms that are ever-changing. You are always going to have different things that are going to surface in your business.
But the most discouraging part for me, is realizing there will never be perfection because you are dealing with humans.
Plus, as a Christian entrepreneur building an online coaching business, there’s added pressure to make sure your heart condition is aligned with Christ. That’s the part the world doesn’t have to worry about.
You’re asking yourself:
- Is my attitude aligned?
- Am I operating in integrity?
- Am I seeking His will in this decision?
- Does this marketing approach honor God?
Our standard is God’s standard. And that changes how you build.
It Will Not Always Feel Good – And You Will Want to Quit
It is not always going to feel good.
You will want to quit your business many times. You will want to alleviate the pain and get out of it. I have never been so stretched than in my online business. Online business truly is full of long-suffering.
You hold on during the hard times, keep showing up and keep walking by faith. All the while, wondering if it’s going to work out as planned.
In the beginning, you’re creating something out of nothing. You don’t know what’s going to work or who will buy from you. But even after consistency comes – money coming in, clients enrolled, established programs – something is bound to shift.
It may be your family, industry changes or just world events that are out of your control. I know with my online Christian coaching business, it feels like every couple years, there has been industry change and world events that change how people show up online.
You will have to keep walking by faith. That doesn’t stop once you have some success.
There will be days you love what you do. And there will be days you want to throw it all away. You’ll have that one client every year that challenges you and makes you question if you were truly meant for this. And you will always feel like there is more to do.
It won’t always feel good. But perseverance builds character. And character builds hope.
You Have to Surrender Often
The key to all of this is surrender.
Your plans are not always going to be God’s plan. Your timing is almost never His. His way is better – but that doesn’t mean it’s easier.
You might enter a year thinking it will be your biggest revenue year yet, and God redirects you. You have to lay down your will in the good seasons and the hard ones.
When blessing comes, you also need to prepare for drought. It’s cyclical.
People will come and go. That’s one of the hardest parts for me. You build deep relationships with clients or team members. You love them and then seasons change, life shifts and they move on. It’s beautiful and it’s sad at the same time.
At the end of the day, we make plans, but God directs our steps.
The women who last in the Christian coaching industry are the ones who get really good at surrender. They put down their own pride and selfish ambition. They refuse to treat business as a vehicle to fuel their ego. They instead see it as sanctification – a way to be more in alignment with Christ & His perfect plan.
There Is a Cost to Building What God Called You To
There is definitely sacrifice in running an online business…
- Time
- Money
- Cost on family
- Burnout
- Effects on your body
I saw a stat the other day that said nine out of 10 entrepreneurs have mental health problems.
There will be seasons of burnout and it can take a huge toll on your physical health as well. Your body stores stress and emotion. If you’re not healthy, your business won’t be healthy either.
As Christian business owners, we are called higher. There will be a cost and a cross to bear.
Does that mean you shouldn’t do it? No way.
But you go into it understanding that this might be part of what God is calling you into – to sanctify you, to make you more holy – while you build what He asked you to build.
It will be one of the hardest things you ever do.
And one of the best. But you have to go into it with the attitude of surrender, a heart for sanctification, long suffering and perseverance to actually do the thing that God called you to do.
