Hey hey, ladies.
I’m honestly excited – because I get to pull back the curtain and just share what summer actually looks like for me right now – running an online business, being at home with my kids, and navigating a completely different season than I’ve been in before.
With kids at home and being a work at home mom, it’s not as complicated as you think – different seasons bring different changes – and I’m going to break down what we have going on this summer, how I’m going to keep my business running and operating, what that tactically looks like – plus, how we’re going to squeeze in a ton of fun.
I have been an entrepreneur since 2013, and I had my first kiddo in 2014, meaning I have had a business the whole time that I have been a mother. My oldest is 11, coming on 12, and that’s a lot of shifting seasons – from newborns to toddlers running around like little crazy animals to elementary school kids.
It’s crazy to me how many summers I’ve been through, and things have really looked different year to year. This year is all about rest and recovery. In previous summers I have traveled a lot and this season I’m taking a different pace – not putting a ton on the calendar and leaning into a laid-back summer… I’m excited for this new season.
Why This Summer Looks Different Than Any Other Before
As we’re prepping for the summer, we’re in that 90 days of May, and things are very, very busy with homeschool things, presentations, sports tryouts, and trying to catch up with everything at the end of the year. It’s always a crazy time of year, and getting through the first half of May is always a doozy.
The big change now is that my 11 year old, almost 12 year old, is pretty much able to babysit her siblings a bit and get paid. Our other kids are getting to the point where they’re pretty responsible, and we’re in a neighborhood where there are always kids around, so we can loosen the leash a little bit.
Because of that, I don’t really need a typical nanny or babysitter this summer. In previous years, we had more childcare – probably 10-ish hours a week – but this summer I really don’t have a lot on the calendar, and I want it to be less planned with a little bit more space.
What Summer Life Actually Looks Like With Kids and Family Rhythms
Summers always have a rhythm to them with the kids.
- Camp for the kids, including a sleepaway camp for my oldest
- VBS and activities for the younger two
- Sports like softball, tennis, baseball, and swimming
The past two summers, I went to Europe, and I am not going this summer. I did a lot of traveling, and while it was amazing, it also felt like summer went by really fast because I was traveling so much.
So this year, I’m ready for it to be more low key. I’m not personally going to be traveling as much, and it’s going to be good.
I also bought a boat last summer, and I’m excited to spend more time on it this year because I didn’t really get to use it until the end of the summer. It’s a great family boat, and I love being on the water – so it’s going to be a fun summer with that.
We’ve also talked about going to Costa Rica last minute – we might sneak away – and we’ll probably do a mountain trip or two. But honestly, we really don’t have a lot on the calendar – and it’s good for my soul.
How I Stay On Track in My Online Business During Summer
Because the summer is more low key, I get a chance to do a lot of the behind-the-scenes work that’s less deadline oriented. I get to work on things in advance, prepare for what’s coming in the fall in my online business, and update things that I’ve been pushing aside.
I’m not going to be launching, and I’m not having to be always present. I get to focus on the things that matter.
This is also a great time to grow my email list. Ads tend to be cheaper, and it’s a good time to let evergreen strategies carry things.
If you’re building a Christian Business Coach brand or stepping into a faith-based online business, it’s really important to understand that not every season is for pushing. Some seasons are for building behind the scenes.
What My Schedule Actually Looks Like in Summer
We also batch podcast episodes in advance. Last summer, we were almost two months ahead, which was amazing.
Beyond that, my summer is mostly just showing up for my group coaching calls and servicing my students. Those are the main things on my calendar, and I’ll move them around if needed depending on what we have going on.
Summer is going to be simple and mostly unscheduled. It’s a time to rest, recalibrate, and get back into rhythms while letting go of others.
Why Summer Is Actually Preparing Your Fall Business Growth
Growth-wise, a lot of summer is planning for the fall.
We’re chipping away at fall preparation, mapping out launches, starting to work on emails, and getting ahead on what’s coming. It’s a time where there’s no rush – we can pace ourselves and work on things behind the scenes.
June and July are kind of truly our off months, but they’re still intentional. We’re building behind the scenes and preparing for what’s coming in the fall, including new interns coming in at the beginning of August.
If you’re learning how to build a coaching business or grow as a Christian Life Coach, this behind-the scenes time is crucial for your online business.
Building a Business That Gives You Freedom in Real Life
The reason this works is because of how the business has been built over time.
The work that I’ve been doing in previous seasons has given me that freedom and flexibility so that I can enjoy my summer without being super stressed. If you don’t do the work in the seasons when you need to, you’re going to feel it three to six months later.
Now, with my kids getting older and needing less constant attention, this is going to be the first summer that feels even more free and less tied down than typical.
Which means more time for fun…and still keeping the business operating where it needs to.
What You Do Now Will Shape Your Next Season
I’m not stopping work completely in the summer, and I’m not shutting my business down. I’m intentionally doing things that are going to set me up for success in the fall.
What you do today – especially in the summer – is going to dictate your fall and what happens next in your business.
If you’re building an online coaching business for Christian women, this is the season to simplify, build behind the scenes, and prepare for what’s ahead – while soaking up time with your loved ones and having a little fun while you’re at it.
Learning to build your online business in this way is the reason I designed The Selah Collective. It’s for women who want to be able to spend time with their families while still running their online business in as little as 5 – 15 hours a week.
Because what you do today – especially in seasons like summer – is what sets you up for what’s ahead. This is your season to say yes to your future and step into what God has in store for you.
