Today we’re going to take a deep dive into something that’s been such a huge part of my 7-figure business journey–building a small but mighty team. If you’re a Holy Spirit-led business owner scaling your coaching or online business, this one is for you. Building a team isn’t just about getting extra help, it’s about building a foundation that supports your vision and allows you to serve with excellence while staying aligned with your faith and family priorities.

Why You Need a Team (Even If It’s Small):

I’ll be honest with you—I could never have hit seven figures on my own. There are things I’m great at and things I’m absolutely not great at. A team bridges that gap. But here’s the deal–I’ve always wanted to keep my team small because I do not enjoy managing people. I know some of you feel me on that! My goal was never to have a huge company where I’m bogged down with endless meetings. Instead, I’ve focused on building a tight-knit team that’s high-performing, aligned with my vision, and shares my values.

The Lessons I’ve Learned (the Hard Way)

1. Hire Slow, Fire Fast

This principle is non-negotiable for me now, but trust me, it wasn’t always that way. In the early days, I’d rush to hire because I desperately needed help. Big mistake. I’ve learned that the first few months of working with someone is a trial period—you’ll see things you didn’t catch in the interview process. People can ace the interview, but the real test comes when they’re in the role. Are they aligned with your values? Do they deliver what they promise? If issues pop up early, they’re almost always repeated. So, if it’s not a fit, let them go quickly.

I once had to let go of a hire after just a couple of months. She was amazing in many ways, but her commitment level didn’t match the intensity the role required. And that’s okay! It’s better to part ways sooner rather than later.

2. You Need Systems Before You Hire

Ladies, let me just say this—you can’t expect someone else to build your vision for you. A huge mistake I see in Christian online coaching businesses is hiring someone to “figure it out.” But if you don’t even know what you’re building or how to explain it, how can they possibly execute it?

Start by documenting your processes for those small, repetitive tasks that drain your energy. Once you’ve got clear systems in place, you can confidently hand them off. For example, I created simple systems for five-minute tasks that stole hours from me. That allowed me to focus on big-picture work while my team handled the rest.

3. Build Out Roles Thoughtfully

Each role on your team needs to be clearly defined—not just for their sake, but for yours. Over the years, I’ve learned that your business can’t hinge on one person. Your systems should be so solid that you could replace a team member without everything falling apart.

This also means tailoring roles to fit the right people for the right season. For instance, I’ve found that hiring women with older kids often works better for high-responsibility roles. Moms with younger kids can face challenges due to their season of life, and that’s okay. The key is ensuring the role’s demands align with the hire’s current capacity.

The Emotional Side of Hiring

I’ll admit it—hiring can be emotional. It’s hard to let someone go, especially when you see their potential but know it’s not the right fit. I’ve walked through seasons where I was hesitant to hire because I didn’t want to deal with the disappointment of it not working out. But every time I leaned into prayer, trusted God’s guidance, and stayed clear on my vision, He brought the right people into my business.

And ladies, let’s not forget the power of discernment. There’s been more than one occasion where the Holy Spirit nudged me, revealing that something wasn’t quite right with a hire. Listening to that nudge has saved me from so much stress and misalignment.

Practical Tips for Building Your Team

  • Vet Like Crazy: My hiring process involves multiple steps, including sample tasks to test commitment, speed, and attention to detail. It’s not foolproof, but it’s effective. If someone isn’t willing to jump through a few hoops, they’re likely not the right fit.
  • Look for Value Alignment: Beyond skills, make sure your team shares your values and beliefs. Someone who’s for you and your mission will go the extra mile without hesitation.
  • Create Backup Plans: Life happens, and people leave. Make sure your systems are strong enough to keep running smoothly, even during transitions. This minimizes downtime and keeps your business moving forward.

Encouragement for the Journey

Ladies, building a team isn’t just about growing your business; it’s about stewarding what God has given you well. Scaling your business while staying faithful to your calling takes intentionality, prayer, and sometimes, tough decisions. But when you align your business with God’s vision, He will equip you with the right people and strategies to move forward.

Final Thoughts

There will be highs and lows, but when you approach it with faith, clarity, and strategy, you’ll find the right people to come alongside your journey. Keep praying, keep refining, and remember—your vision matters, and God will bring the right people into your path to help you carry it out. Until next time, keep building, keep scaling, and keep walking by faith.
