Hey ladies, this week I want to keep it short and sweet and talk about how I’m reliving my 90s summers.
Last week I was talking all about how I typically run my summers as an online business owner. I’m excited to chat even more with you about our summer plans and how things are shifting this summer with my family.
We have had so much going on in my online business over the recent month, honestly two months. I hosted a retreat, we’ve had a ton of projects and launches going on, and I’ve been hitting business very, very hard with very little break.
I did travel for a couple of weeks, but that was also tiring and I had to work very hard to prep for that. And I think I just got to a point where I realized I needed that white space this summer.
Remembering What Summers Felt Like Before Phones And Social Media
I just want you to think about 90s summers.
I was born in 1986, so I was a 90s kid.
And I want to take you back to the summer of 1996. I remember being on vacation in Chicago with my family, because my dad was from Chicago, and the Bulls were playing in the championship.
I remember watching that game… Michael Jordan, Dennis Rodman, Scottie Pippen were all playing. That era was truly epic!
But on that same trip, we also went on a fishing trip. We used to go to a cabin in Minnesota that my dad grew up going to – and honestly everything was just pretty disconnected back then.
This was before:
- Phones
- Checking DM’s all day
- Being connected all the time
It was just slow and it was present.
And honestly, I feel like that’s something we’ve kind of lost.
I remember another 90s summer where we canceled cable for the whole summer and you would just ride your bikes around the neighborhood and hang out with your friends…go to the pool and do all the things. It was glorious.
Creating More White Space And A More Family-Focused Summer
My goal this summer for my own family is definitely to have a slower 90s summer; however, I will be still continuing to build my online coaching business.
But I also feel like I’m in this spot of actually letting go of a lot of things that I have been holding onto for too long.
I have a great team member coming on who’s taking on more hours, and I’m excited to relinquish control of some of the things that I’ve been controlling too much of for a long period of time as a Christian Business Coach.
And as a family, we actually decided knowingly and unknowingly to just have a very chill summer.
I didn’t even sign my kids up for sports this summer. We still might do tennis because it’s pretty low-key – but let me tell you, it is SO nice seeing that white space on the calendar.
I’ve coached softball the last three years and honestly that’s definitely been a lot. One of our kids is going to overnight camp for a week, but otherwise our calendar is pretty clear.
And honestly, I feel like this is exactly what I need for this season in my life.
This summer I’m excited for:
- Last minute hikes
- More time working on my health
- A really family-focused summer
- Not feeling so rushed day-to-day
I’m also not going to have childcare this summer. Sometimes I have childcare help, but this summer I want us to be able to “live life”, be able to do things last-minute, and not have to worry about schedules.
I’ll still be doing things in my online business, but my goal is not to be chained to my laptop or tied to the DM’s.
Building An Online Business That Eventually Creates Freedom
One of the main reasons you start this online business journey is to create freedom…
But if you are at the beginning, you really can’t get out of doing the grind. You have to go do the thing… You don’t really get the luxury of a slow 90s summer if you’re trying to figure everything out.
I am seven years into my online business journey and fourteen years into entrepreneurship overall.
And so I really feel like I’ve earned my right to slow down – I’ve paid my dues.
I want to set the expectation that this is not something you get overnight. It’s something you earn… Something you work really hard and hustle for.
But that discipline eventually buys you freedom.
Sometimes we’re exhausted and we’re overbooked and we’re not present. And sometimes you just have to take those moments and say, I’m not going to keep operating like this in this next season. I just need a reset.
Using This Summer To Think More Clearly And Learn Again
What I also love about taking time like this is that I can focus on some things that I just haven’t had the time for.
There are some courses I want to dive into. I bought a YouTube program in January that I started, but once business got busy it totally fell off the bandwagon and became less of a priority.
And I want to get back to where I can start thinking and planning.
Honestly, I’m just excited for the season of rest and recovery.
Taking The White Space Season After Years Of Consistency
All that to say, I’m just really excited to have a 90s summer – the white space that we just haven’t had in a long time… And I think we really need it.
And yes, we still have our phones and social media and all the things. We’re not going to completely unplug.
I’ll still be moving forward in my online business – we’ll be doing promotions and different things, but I also have the team support to help push that stuff through where I don’t have to stress about it as much.
Just remember that If you are in the beginning stages as an online Christian coach, you need to take this time to grind and figure all the things out… You have to walk through that season. But when you get to the point where you’ve grown, scaled and have been consistent for so many years, take the white space season… Take the 90s summer.
