Hey girl, hey! I am so excited to talk about this topic today – because if I’m being honest, I have traditionally had a hard time establishing good boundaries in a lot of areas of my life. As a Christian Online Business Coach, I see this all the time in our industry too. We love to serve. We love to give. We want to walk in love like the Bible calls us to.
But here’s the truth: without healthy business and personal boundaries, you will burn out before you finish the race God has called you to run.
When I say boundaries, I’m talking about the kind that protects your peace, your time, and your energy – both in your personal life and as a Christian CEO. Over the years, I’ve learned (the hard way) that boundaries are not selfish. They’re a form of stewardship. They’re how you honor what God has given you – your family, your business, your calling – without running yourself into the ground.
So today, I’m sharing five boundaries that have helped me run a sustainable Christian coaching business while keeping my peace. These are the exact things I’ve put in place so I can finish well, not just start strong.
Why Boundaries Are Hard for Christians
You feel guilt when you tell someone no or prioritize your own peace sometimes…and as Christians, I think we have a hard time drawing boundaries because we want to subscribe to the gospel of love.
Sound familiar? Somewhere along the way, many of us started believing that if we’re not putting everyone ahead of ourselves at every single moment, we must not really love them. Add in the fact that spouses, parents, clients, and friends all have their own expectations about what your boundaries should be, and it gets messy fast.
But here’s the truth: God calls us to serve, yes – but He also calls us to steward. You can’t pour out if your cup is empty. And when you have no structure in your business, you’re not just sacrificing your peace – you’re sabotaging your sustainability. As a Christian Life Coach, you are called to serve your clients well while also honoring your health, family, and spiritual walk.
Let’s break down the five boundaries that have made the biggest difference for me as a Holy Spirit-led business owner.
1. Social Media Boundaries
This summer, I hardly touched social media. I went to Europe for two weeks – Ireland, London, Normandy, Paris. I took the kids to the water park, on bike rides, and even bought a boat that my dad and I have been fixing up. We went camping, cruised to Alaska, spent time in Breckenridge. And you know what? I didn’t feel pressured to document every moment.
It has been SO nice to be disconnected – my team posts for me, but I’m not really sharing much of my life behind the scenes.
If you want to know how to build a coaching business without burning out, start here. Social media can be a powerful tool for building relationships and growing your email list. But it can also become a constant drain if you feel like every moment of your life needs to be curated for content.
My advice? Use it as a business tool, not a personal lifeline. Decide in advance how much time you’ll spend on it, when you’ll be off, and how much of your personal life you’ll share. For me, that might mean 30 minutes a day during the week and logging out on weekends. Boundaries here protect both your peace and your creativity.
2. Communication Boundaries
When I first started my Christian coaching business, I responded to client messages within minutes – weekends, evenings, vacations, it didn’t matter. I told myself it was about serving well, but really, it was my nervous system thinking the world would crash if I didn’t respond.
Now? I have much stricter rules.
I don’t promise a response to clients for 5-7 business days inside of Voxer…usually I still respond in 24-48 hours, BUT if I’m traveling, my kids are sick, I’m hosting a retreat, or I just feel depleted, I have the space to respond slower without guilt.
This protects my mental health and creates client boundaries that set a healthy precedent. If you want long-term business sustainability, you can’t live in constant fight-or-flight mode. Set expectations early, honor your word, and don’t make yourself available 24/7.
3. Scheduling Boundaries
I build my schedule around what works for me and my family – not the other way around. Most of my client calls happen in the afternoons, so I can get my creative work done in the mornings without feeling depleted. I also keep my one-to-one and group coaching calls limited each week.
If you’re running a faith-based business, you have to be realistic about your capacity. You can’t schedule your life around trying to please every single client’s calendar.
Remember: when something is important to your clients, they’ll find a way to make it work.
4. Client Delivery Boundaries
This one’s huge. I have systems, and I stick to them.
I’m not going to stray from my systems – not because I don’t want to be flexible, but because I’m accountable to the processes I’ve created in my own business.
For example, I use Asana to track every project and deliverable. That keeps me on schedule and ensures nothing falls through the cracks. I also have clear limits on what I will, and won’t – do for clients. I’m here to coach, advise, and guide, not to be a done-for-you contractor.
If you’re a health coach, you might create a custom meal plan – but you’re not going to do your client’s grocery shopping. These boundaries for entrepreneurs keep your role clear, protect your time, and help your clients take ownership of their results.
5. Building Boundaries
This one might surprise you: you need boundaries with yourself.
I love creating things. But if I created everything I thought about on a whim, I would absolutely wear myself thin.
Entrepreneurs – especially those running Holy Spirit-led businesses, often get excited about new ideas. That’s not a bad thing, but if you constantly start new projects without fully stewarding the ones you already have, you’ll burn out and see little long-term fruit.
Before you launch something new, ask yourself:
- Have I fully optimized what I already have?
- Have I built the systems to sustain it?
- Do I have the capacity to follow through well?
Sometimes, the most powerful move you can make is to perfect what you’ve already built.
Boundaries as a Form of Stewardship
At the end of the day, healthy boundaries create a healthy you. God calls us to work hard and to rest. If you’re going to finish your race well, you have to pace yourself. Without boundaries, you’ll run fast but burn out before you ever see the generational impact God wants to bring through your business.
So, whether it’s limiting your time on social media, giving yourself permission to respond to clients at a healthy pace, structuring your calendar to match your energy, sticking to your systems, or telling yourself no to yet another shiny new project – remember: this is not selfish. This is stewardship.
