You know that moment when your brain is buzzing with ideas, but your heart is asking the Lord, “What do you want me to talk about today?” Have you experienced these moments too? This happened to me as I was settling in to create this specific episode!
I knew I had an outline ready and a topic I could easily jump into—but through my years of creating, I have learned to leave a little space for divine direction. And wouldn’t you know, the Holy Spirit “dropped” something that felt was so timely and needed:
‘It is time…time to talk about how to hear from Me in business.’
So that’s where we’re going today. Because I know there are so many faith-forward Life Coaches, Kingdom Entrepreneurs, online business course creators, and ministry-minded women who are asking questions like:
- “How do I know if this business idea is from God?”
- “What if I’m just feeling emotional and not actually being led?”
- “What if I get it wrong?”
And I just want to say: I’ve been there. And I’ve walked with the Holy Spirit long enough to know what I feel like when I have what I call a God-drop idea versus what I feel like when I’m trying to force something from my own strength.
Your Feelings Aren’t Facts…But They’re Not Irrelevant Either
One of the first things I’ve learned in this whole journey of launching coaching programs, building online business offers, and scaling a Christian online business is this:
We need order—but we also need room for the Holy Spirit to move.
It is true that our emotions can absolutely point us toward something, but they should not be our final confirmation. I’ve felt both excitement and fear in starting a new business idea. I’ve had moments of divine peace and moments of absolute resistance. The key is learning when you’re being emotionally reactive…and when you’re being spiritually prompted.
That’s why I will tell you; don’t give the stage and a microphone to your emotions! Feel them. Acknowledge them. But don’t build your business on them.
When God Gave Me a Plan…and My Emotions Tried to Derail It
Let me be real: I almost decided not to host our upcoming Set-Apart Launch: Endless Summer Edition event!
Yep. I had all the “good” reasons not to do it—family logistics, end of season homeschool activities, a cold I brought back from our retreat, family trip planning for June, and so many behind-the-scenes projects that need nurturing. But back in December, I just knew I was supposed to run four live events this year. Believing this was a God-drop I committed to myself that 2025 is the year of momentum and structure.
But oh, how tempting it would be to let comfort win right now. I could easily reason my way out of what the Lord had already confirmed back in December.
The Holy Spirit convicted me. I felt more and more that I was supposed to stick to the plan. By staying the course I realized that I wasn’t being rigid—I was being obedient to what He had already told me. You know what happened when I did that? Divine creativity flooded in. Suddenly I was flowing with energy and ideas. That’s a huge confirmation for me that I’m aligned with heaven’s agenda.
The Holy Spirit Often Speaks in Divine Creativity
Here’s a little tip from my online business journey:
When the Holy Spirit is prompting me with something, it never feels forced.
I start to get a flood of ideas that seem to come out of nowhere. I get a deep internal feeling of YES. It might still be a little scary, but it doesn’t feel chaotic to me.
When I committed to moving forward with the Set-Apart Launch, I felt the momentum shift. All of a sudden, I was dreaming again, I had an unexplainable peace and my team was executing well too.
Ladies—peace and creativity are two ways I test the Spirit in my life.
And if the ideas feel dry, like I’m just pushing through quicksand, that’s when I pause and pray: “Is this a time to wrestle? Or is it time to lay this thing down?”
A Personal Walk with the Holy Spirit: Not Theology, But Testimony
I’ll be the first to say—I’m not a trained theologian, especially regarding the Holy Spirit. But I’ve walked with the Lord since I was seven years old. I don’t remember a time I didn’t know Him and I realize this is not all that common. It is something I truly consider a gift, and it’s shaped how I hear from Him today. This connection has so much to do with why I started my faith forward online business coaching.
I call them “Holy Spirit drops.” A whisper in my spirit. A dollop in my heart. An idea that feels alive and weighty in a good way all at the same time.
Other times, I’ve had signs that tell me I need to stop and at minimum, re-evaluate. Rapid, soul-deep moments of fear that I now recognize as protection:
- Like when we almost built a house on land where kids had drowned…and I couldn’t shake the heaviness after I found out what had happened.
- Or, in my twenties, when I dated a guy dabbling in New Age stuff. I felt this chest-level oppression while we were on a family trip to Europe.
- Then there was a time not too many years ago that I brought someone into our home and ignored the warning signs—only to watch it unravel.
Sometimes His leading is gentle. Sometimes it’s loud. But it always leads to truth, clarity, and peace.
Is This Business Idea From God? Here’s How to Discern It
If you’ve been dreaming of launching or pivoting your online business, here are a few things I’ve learned about discerning God’s voice:
1. Commit to Something—even if it’s committing to wait for a period of time.
Clarity doesn’t come to the double-minded. Make a decision, even if it’s to revisit in 30 days. You can always surrender a decision you’ve committed to. You can’t surrender indecision.
2. Start Before You Have Full Clarity.
In reality, it could take you 1–2 years just to refine a vision. Begin building the “thing” as you start to discern your prompting. Progress builds clarity.
3. Excitement Often Signals the Holy Spirit is Moving.
If you’re wildly excited about an idea, work on it. Flow with it. Build while the fire is burning.
4. Count the Cost.
You’ll probably be stretched—time, finances, comfort. But God honors obedience in the stretch.
5. Be Wise + Walk in Faith.
Don’t quit your job if you can’t feed your family! But DO start planning the exit. Test with some effort towards your goal. Look for fruit. Evaluate and adjust if necessary.
The Bottom Line: Surrender + Strategy
This is your walk with the Lord. Only you can know how He speaks to you. But I’ve learned that He is a God of order and creativity. Wisdom and risk. Obedience and rest.
There will be times you feel tested, and there will be times you feel carried by grace. Either way, your job is to partner with Him, not build apart from Him.
